Project Hallway Inspired

Here's Jeanne Liberkowski "Project Hallway" photos from last week's challenge--chair cover using pajamas and sheet . Using her favorite leopard pajama pants, white sheet dyed red, black, brown, and tan.

Landscape stitchery artwork on the back was done by dying the background and hand-guided stitching for trees.

Wee Wee Pads and Glueguns, Oh My!

Episode 2 inspiration is unconventional materials....petstore products specifically. I think I'm going the gluegun route...no sense spending oodles of time (or money) on it. This challenge makes me think of the great designs that the slipcover summit teams came up with. They grabbed whatever they could to make their statement. Scroll down on this blog to see the cute designs....
Remember you can watch all the episodes of Project Runway as they are aired, or anytime after on lifetimetv.com.

"Project Hallway" first challenge!

This was a hard challenge! Thin slippery sheets and stretchy knit jammies are not that easy to whip into a slipcover! Pictured is what I started with; striped pajama bottoms and a t-shirt from last year's upholstery event. I grabbed an old sheet from the basement....it's actually kind of smelly and stained. Lucky for you  this photo isn't in smell-o-vision....
I'm still working on the lumbar pillow made of the t-shirt, but here's the slipcover design I came up with:
Tomorrow I'll post a before and after with my finished pillow. My "fashion forward" design includes the pillow headrest buttoned to the top of the inside back. Also, I opted not to make padded underwear to camoflage the original attached pillowback. Instead I sewed in 2 ruched panels (I learned that term from watching previous episodes of Project Runway :) I can't wait to see your designs!!!

Come as you are slipcover!

The challenge was to take the pajamas off their backs and a white sheet to come up with a fashion forward winning design. Here's the winner of episode one - made from a pair of boxer shorts and a dyed sheet:
I had on my old upholstery fair t-shirt and striped bottoms....
What did you wear to bed last night, and what kind of slipcover are you going to make?

It's Official! 1st Place Slipcover Design Contest Winner

1st Place Winner Is Jeanne Liberkowski of Orlando, FL

Last summer I was approached by JT Thompson, owner of the historic Stetson Mansion in Deland, FL to do soft furnishings for the apartment over the Carriage House. the Mansion is open for tours and special events on the grounds. They wanted to make this room a bit more contemporary than the rest of the property, but still keeping with the style. This room can be used by brides in preparation for their wedding. My first thought was the Audrey Hepburn movie "Sabrina" with Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. Sabrina is daughter of the chauffeur to a rich corporate family. She and her father's quarters are in the carriage house/garage apartment. she is in love with the playboy son but eventually falls for the "good" son (Bogey). Anyway, JT wanted white and black furnishings in this blue room and needed accessories, cushions, window treatments and sofa. I designed the simple white cotton twill sofa slipcover with an unusual hem detail and 1/4" ribbon trim and buttons; and then I carried the same design through on the hobbled roman shades. The "chandelier" pillow is one I screen printed and is reversible--black on one side, white on reverse.

Slipcovers and 9 Project Runway!

Are you inspired by the reality show Project Runway? How do the contestants come up with such clever ideas and create entire outfits in a day? Have you thought, "that would be fun to do in the workroom!"?

Well here's your chance! The Slipcover Network is sponsoring a fun "contest" of sorts to put our creative urges to the test. In conjunction with the upcoming season 9 Project Runway - we will be showcasing our own designs using the weekly inspiration from the series.

The rules are minimal - we will post the "inspiration", but then, you will already know it if you watch the show.

You have the weekend  to come up with an inspired and creative design using your choice of chair. Post your photo and description on Monday and then cast your vote for the winning design on Tuesday. We suggest keeping it simple and inexpensive. After all - we can't tell if you used that scrap left over from your last job, or even if you sewed it together or used a (gasp!) gluegun!

Everyone is welcome to join in. So far we have an impressive list of Slipcover Fabricators Extraordinaire:

Tessy Bennett
Sue Sifukis
Cathy Mahoney
Rachel Short
Linda Miids
Christy Statz
Emily Pettit
Judy Ellis
Sheryl McAfee
Angie Knowles
Kim Newell
Claudia Buchanan

Of course, we all know the mantra........."Make It Work!!!"
