Quickie welt insertion question

When you have welt crossing welt, do you pull the cord out at the intersection (so that there is no cord at that point, just empty welt)? I've done it both ways, but can't decide which looks better. I'll go with the "industry standard" - whatever it is!

when I learned, I was told to do it, and I pull out little enough to make the stitch secure and yet have it not be real obvious. Bottom line is you want the stitches to hold, and if it will stitch well with the cord in there, why not leave it. I use soft poly cord too, so I can stitch over if I really wanted to.

Thanks so much, Shirley!

Um, are you saying that you DON'T, but COULD? Or that you normally DO stitch over welt at an intersection?

AND while your at it...what size welt do you (your customers) prefer? I've been using the upholstery standard 5/32 - I think it may be a little small looking for slipcovers.

Good morning...

There is a purpose for pulling out welt and that is bulk, plus as Shirley writes you want the stitch to hold. So yes pull it out a little past where you will be stitching.

Kim 5/32 welt is a great size for slipcovers. Remember fabric does make the welt cords finish size bigger, so it may no longer be 5/32 when you are finished.

I am using the welt cord that Alicia (aka zipperlady) sells. It is poly and soft, but still has bulk.

In some project I will use 4/32 cord and sometimes not cord at all (flat welt)instead.

As far as standard goes... It's what works best for the fabric and the customer.

:)

ps... have you sent your recipes to Claudia for the cookbook?

I am using the paper wrapped cording. I didn't know everyone else was using the soft cording. I am going to have to try the soft cording. Since I use the paper cording I always pull the cording out where two cordings meet.

I have a couple recipes to send. Just need time to sit down and write them out.

99% of the time I pull it out. On the wing outline where it meets the arm I NEVER pull it out. Where the intersected cord rises above and vertical to the cord doing the crossing, it's better the leave it. If, that is, you can sew well and securely through it.

Thanks, everyone!

I also use the same welt as Alicia. This welt is (I have been told) actually slightly larger than 5/32" industry standard. It's polyester, and softer than fiber (paper) but stiffer than really soft cord.

Tessy and Kim, please let me know if you would like a sample! :)

What is your source for the amazing poly not too soft, not too hard cord? (I use the tissue wrapped)

Alicia has it...

Correction: I don't use tissue wrapped!! I use braided fiber, I'm sure there's a big difference.

I use the poly welt that Rowley sells. I believe it's 1/4". The cotton one is too soft (my industrial machine would just eat it), plus you have to pre-wash it since it will shrink. I am surprised at the tissue one: does it wash ok?

When two welts intersect, I pull out a bit so I don't have the thickness of two welts.

I don't use recipes, sorry.

Agnes...

Then submit something you like to eat from your area.

How do you cook sea food?

That would be super to have something from the Keys in the recipe book
