The recliner was in okay shape but a bit tired – the client wanted to freshen things up a bit.






























I ended up making FOUR separate slipcovers in order for the chair to recline.

Slipcover Design Contestant D

The chair was on it's way to the dump and now it is a bedtime story spot for identical twin grandsons.

Soft golden yellow fabric by Greenhouse was chosen for the chair. A zipper was needed because the chair has a wide top, a narrow bottom and limited tuck in around the arms.



Kast animal print fabric (Bangkok Tropical) was used to make inserts in the box pleat skirt as well as using selected animal sections to cover the buttons that were used for the tufting on the back of the chair.

The chairs green cording a Greenhouse tweed was also used on cornices in the nursery. All fabrics were used in acompanying footstool, throw pillows and lamp.

Slipcover Design Contestant C

I made careful measurements and muslin pattern onsite.





















4 different fabrics were brought back to the shop. Because the 100% cotton was different from the others I made interfacing for light weight fabric. Bows, ties, welting and hidden zipper were special details.

Slipcover Design Contestant B

Made from a lightweight gingham chintz which stretched enough to give a nice fit.

The bottom is finished with tabs that velcro was stitched to and then attached underneathe to self adhesive velcro.

Slipcover Design Contestant A

This slipcover project utilized two coordinating cotton sateen by Waverly. The face fabric has a dominant pattern that repeats every 30 inches. This required careful planning for fabric placement.

The companion print is a coordinating stripe that was used for the cording, and the gussets. The down filled cushions also carry the pattern match, for both sides of each cushion.

The pattern matching was definitely the challenge of this slipcover, but in the end, the fabric repeat actually fit the stature of the chair quite nicely. As the project progressed, all of the lines became a continuous flow, making the end result quite pleasing.

I'm excited to announce my slipcover pattern collection, with the first pattern being for straight back Parsons chairs. Patterns for other style of Parsons chairs are in the works.

These patterns will be available in 3 formats: a PDF file you can download and print the pattern pieces at home; on CD with the patterns pieces printed at home; and finally a full size paper pattern.

Instructions are written with the beginner sewer in mind and easy to follow.

This is not a how to it's a can you ?? series. You sure will need some one on one help. Angie does a terrific job teaching this, and it's very easy to gain confidence and speed once you practice.

Judit and I ...

...have been busy inventing and documenting strange cushions. Mouse over the post title, this is a link to the Cushion How To Blog which this week features a photo series instructions for the cushion pictured at left.

This pair of cushions made from scratch replaces attached backs on a rounded back sofa. Judit and I have been making photo instructional series of this and other peculiar cushions.

I would enjoy teaching those things I have learned most recently at the Summit next year. This weeks featured cushion, the segmented and hinged cushion more reliably stands tall with the assistance of some hidden pellon bucram.

So much easier of course to cover a loose cushion than an attached back when slipcovering, but once we pulled the existing cushion out of the attached back upholstery casing it refused to stand tall and bend as required.

Look for zippers in your attached cushions, just pull the cushion out and cover it separately...that usually works without this fancy solution. This solution was about bending into the curve of the rounded back.

Using up scrap foam and playing with strange ideas for cushions which solve unusual problems, many of those are bendables. More exciting Cushion How To photos series to come !

learning new things

Having some fun today, remembering old jobs while I get new photos to update my website. Downloaded Picasa, trying to assemble folders ( for the first time ) and add descriptions to pictures. Have lots of new jobs going on, and a better camera to make them look good.

My hips are done and working perfectly again, can I brag that I feel 45 ? Does that sound right ? ( Ha ). Looking forward to challenging work and being as busy as I can be. Two years idle was quite enough !
